Depart Reykjavík at 8:00 AM and set out on a West Iceland road trip that feels like stepping into a storybook. Over 10 unforgettable hours, you’ll traverse the mystical Snæfellsnes Peninsula — often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its diverse landscapes all in one place. Moreover, Jules Verne had greatly contributed to its reputation by locating here the begining of his famous novel “Journey to the center of the Earth”, in 1864.

Your route includes black pebble beaches, ancient lava fields, soaring cliffs, vibrant fishing villages, and of course, the legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier, believed by many to be an energy center of the Earth.

We’ll make plenty of scenic stops along the way — from the postcard-perfect Mt. Kirkjufell to the mysterious basalt arches of Arnarstapi — and of course, our journey is flexible based on your interests, pace, and the mood of the day.

You’ll return to Reykjavík in the evening, camera full, mind refreshed, and heart full of Icelandic magic.

🦭 Ytri-Tunga Beach – Seal Watching by the Golden Sands

Unlike most of Iceland’s volcanic shores, Ytri-Tunga surprises with soft, golden sands — and an active colony of curious seals. These playful locals can often be spotted lounging on the rocks or peeking out of the waves. A peaceful spot for wildlife lovers and photographers alike, especially in the soft morning light.

🏘️ Lýsuhóll Horse Farm in Iceland

Nestled in Snæfellsbær, Lýsuhóll is a family-run horse farm offering horseback riding tours through the stunning beaches and lava fields of Snæfellsnes. Stay in cozy cottages with private facilities, enjoy delicious Icelandic meals at the restaurant, and experience the magic of the northern lights in this peaceful countryside retreat.

⛪ Búðakirkja – The Black Church in the Lava Field

Surrounded by hauntingly beautiful lava fields and distant mountain peaks, Búðakirkja is a stark and striking symbol of Icelandic minimalism. Built in the 19th century, this black wooden church with its white-framed windows is more than just a place of worship — it’s a timeless landmark that perfectly contrasts with the wild terrain that surrounds it.

🌋 Snæfellsjökull Glacier – The Gateway to the Center of the Earth

Towering above the peninsula, this glacier-capped stratovolcano is as mystical as it is majestic. Immortalized by Jules Verne in Journey to the Center of the Earth, Snæfellsjökull is believed by some to be one of Earth’s great energy centers. Whether shrouded in mist or gleaming in sunlight, its presence is magnetic — a crown jewel of West Iceland.

🪨 Arnarstapi & Hellnar – Wild Cliffs and Ocean Arches

Arnarstapi is a picturesque fishing village nestled on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, surrounded by dramatic cliffs teeming with seabirds. This charming village is a true haven for nature enthusiasts. The scenic coastal trail that connects Arnarstapi to the nearby village of Hellnar is a highlight, winding past crashing waves, jagged lava cliffs, and striking basalt formations. Along the way, you’ll encounter the iconic Gatklettur lava arch, cliffs teeming with seabirds, and deep-cut gorges, all contributing to an otherworldly seascape that feels untouched by time. It’s a favorite spot for both nature lovers and photographers. The trail offers a relatively easy, family-friendly path, and while it officially ends at Gatklettur, you can continue on to Hellnar, where the stunning landscape continues to unfold.

🌉 Miðgjá Stone Bridge – Nature’s Own Archway

Just off the coast near Arnarstapi, Miðgjá is a naturally formed lava arch created by the relentless power of wind and sea. Standing atop the cliffs and watching waves crash below this ancient formation is a humbling experience — a testament to the slow, powerful sculpting of Iceland’s coastlines.

🗻 Lóndrangar Cliffs

One of the most striking natural wonders on the peninsula, Lóndrangar are two dramatic basalt rock pinnacles rising from the sea, remnants of a volcanic crater. Standing like ancient sentinels along the coast, they’re a must-see for anyone exploring Snæfellsnes. This iconic stop offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, crashing waves, and nearby lava fields, making it perfect for photographers and nature lovers alike.

🖤 Djúpalónssandur – The Black Pebble Beach of Legends

Djúpalónssandur is a majestic black sand beach on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, renowned for its striking rock formations and surreal, volcanic landscapes. Once a bustling fishing hub, it now offers a windswept, otherworldly experience, with smooth black pebbles, twisted rocks, and the constant roar of the Atlantic waves. Visitors can explore the fascinating remains of the Epine GY7 shipwreck from 1948, scattered among the beach’s stones. The beach is also home to the famous “lifting stones,” once used by fishermen to prove their strength. Every corner of this captivating site feels like a step into a fairytale lava world, rich in history and legend.

⛪ Ingjaldshólskirkja – Iceland’s Oldest Concrete Church

Built in 1903 and perched on a gentle hilltop, Ingjaldshólskirkja offers sweeping views of the surrounding lava fields, coastline, and Snæfellsjökull in the distance. This red-roofed church is a popular photo stop — and fun fact: it’s so picturesque, it’s even used as a standard eye test image in China!

🌲 Berserkjahraun – A Lava Field of Viking Myths

Berserkjahraun is a 4,000-year-old lava field on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, renowned for its stunning, moss-covered rocks and unique lava formations. While it’s not a typical viewpoint, it offers a little-used tourist track that winds through this vast and beautiful landscape, surrounded by majestic volcanoes. The area is steeped in legend, with the Eyrbyggja Saga telling the tale of two Swedish berserkers who were tasked with carving a road through the harsh terrain to prove their loyalty. Today, Berserkjahraun remains a quiet, otherworldly place that feels like stepping into a piece of Icelandic folklore.

🏔️ Mt. Kirkjufell – Iceland’s Most Photographed Mountain

Standing 463 meters tall and perfectly sculpted by nature, Mt. Kirkjufell rises dramatically from the coastline like a sentinel guarding the sea. Paired with the gentle Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls in the foreground, this iconic peak has captured the hearts (and camera rolls) of travelers from all over the world. Game of Thrones fans may recognize it as “Arrowhead Mountain” — but for everyone else, it’s simply unforgettable.
